Kitchen Refresh or Full Remodel? How to Choose

Not every dated kitchen needs to be torn out. Sometimes new countertops, a backsplash and fresh paint change the room completely. Other times the layout is the real problem, and only a full remodel fixes it. Here is how to tell which one fits your kitchen and your budget.

When a refresh is enough

If your layout works and your cabinets are solid, a refresh can give you a new-looking kitchen in less time and for less money. A refresh usually includes some of these:

  • New countertops, such as quartz, granite or butcher block

  • A tile backsplash

  • Painted or refaced cabinets and new hardware

  • New flooring

  • Fresh paint, trim and crown molding

One of our recent customers replaced old countertops with butcher block, and that one change made the whole kitchen feel new.

When a full remodel makes sense

A full remodel is worth it when the kitchen does not work the way you live. Common signs:

  • Not enough counter space or storage

  • A layout where two people keep bumping into each other

  • Cabinets that are damaged, sagging or falling apart

  • You want to open a wall to the dining or family room

  • The flooring or walls need to come out anyway

A full remodel usually means demolition, wall changes, new cabinets and countertops, tile, flooring, trim and paint. If you move the sink, range or other appliances, plumbing, electrical and permit work come into play, which adds time and cost, so settle the layout early.

Questions to answer before you start

  • What bothers you most about the kitchen today?

  • Are you staying in the home for years, or getting it ready to sell?

  • What has to stay, such as appliances or flooring?

  • How long can you go without a working kitchen?

  • What budget range are you comfortable with?

Plan for life during the work

Set up a temporary kitchen in another room with a microwave, a coffee maker and a folding table. Clear the counters and cabinets before work starts, and plan for some days without a sink. Your contractor should protect your floors and clean up at the end of each day.

Get it in writing

Ask for a written, itemized quote that lists the scope, the materials and finishes, what is not included and a schedule. Any change during the job should be written and priced before the work is done.
